How do I start praying if I've never really done it?

Prayer is talking to God. That's the whole definition. You don't need a technique, a book, or the right words. But if you've never done it and "just talk to God" sounds like a blank page, here's a place to start.

Tonight: the two-minute version

  1. Sit somewhere quiet. Put the phone in another room.
  2. Make the sign of the cross. (Right hand: forehead, chest, left shoulder, right shoulder. "In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.")
  3. Say, out loud or in your head: "God, I'm here. I don't really know how to do this."
  4. Tell him one thing you're grateful for. One thing you're worried about. One thing you did wrong today.
  5. Say the Our Father. (If you don't know it, it's in our Rosary guide.)
  6. Sign of the cross. Done.

That's a complete prayer. Two minutes. Do it again tomorrow.

The habit that sticks

Same time, same place, every day. Not longer — more consistent. Two minutes every night beats thirty minutes once a month. Attach it to something you already do: coffee, brushing your teeth, the drive home.

Four kinds of prayer (so you're not just asking for stuff)

An old acronym: ACTS.

  • Adoration — "You're God. I'm not. Thank you for that."
  • Contrition — "Here's where I messed up today. I'm sorry."
  • Thanksgiving — "Here's what went right."
  • Supplication — "Here's what I need. Here's who I'm worried about."

Hit all four and you've prayed well. Hit one and you've still prayed.

Memorized prayers aren't cheating

The Our Father, the Hail Mary, the Glory Be — Catholics use these constantly, and there's a reason. On the days you have no words, they give you words. Jesus literally handed us the Our Father when the disciples asked how to pray. Use it.

Reading the Bible as prayer

Start with one of the Gospels — Mark is the shortest. Read a few verses. Stop at anything that hits. Sit with it. Ask God what he's saying. That's a 1,500-year-old practice called lectio divina and it's exactly that simple.

What if nothing happens?

Usually nothing happens, in the feelings sense. That's normal. Prayer isn't about producing a feeling; it's about showing up to a relationship. You don't stop talking to your spouse on the days it doesn't feel magical. Keep going. Over months, something shifts. Everyone who prays daily says the same thing.

Level up when you're ready

  • Go to Mass. It's the biggest prayer there is.
  • Pray one decade of the Rosary in the car.
  • Sit in a church for ten minutes when it's empty. Most are unlocked during the day.
  • Try a daily examen at night: where did I see God today? Where did I miss him?

Start tonight. Two minutes. It's cool to be Catholic.
