I haven't been to church in 10 years. How do I come back?

Here's the thing nobody tells you: you were never un-Catholic. Baptism doesn't expire. You don't re-apply. You just come back.
The three-step version
1. Go to Mass this Sunday. Any parish. Sit in the back if you want. Don't receive Communion yet — just be there. Nobody will ask where you've been. (First time in a while? Here's a refresher on what happens.)
2. Go to confession. This is the actual "coming back" moment. It takes ten minutes, you don't need to remember the words, and the priest will be genuinely glad. Here's exactly what to say.
3. Receive Communion next Sunday. That's it. You're back. Fully.
You can do all three in one week. Or spread it over a month. There's no deadline.
"But I left for a reason."
Fair. Most people did. A few honest responses:
Something a priest, a teacher, or a Catholic said or did hurt you. That was real, and it was wrong. The Church is full of sinners — that's literally the business model. The person who hurt you doesn't own the faith. Come back for the thing itself, not for them.
You disagree with something the Church teaches. Then disagree, and come to Mass anyway. You're allowed to wrestle. Plenty of saints did. The Church would rather have you in the pew with questions than outside with none.
You just drifted. College, work, kids, life. Most common reason by far. No drama required to come back; just show up.
You did something you think disqualifies you. It doesn't. Divorce, abortion, addiction, a decade of whatever — confession exists precisely for that. The priest has heard it. Go.
"I'm divorced and remarried."
Come to Mass. Then talk to a priest about an annulment — it's more common and more workable than people think. Don't let a form keep you from God.
"I don't believe all of it anymore."
Come anyway. Faith isn't a light switch; it's a muscle. It comes back by using it. Pray badly. Go to Mass distracted. Keep showing up. Belief tends to follow practice, not the other way around.
What's changed since you left
Not much, honestly. Some of the Mass responses were updated in 2011 ("and with your spirit" instead of "and also with you"). The pew cards have it. Everything else is the same it's been for a very long time — which is sort of the point.
A real note
The people who come back after a long time are often the ones who end up loving it most. Not because they're better — because they know what they were missing. Welcome home. It's cool to be Catholic.
